SEO Medium impact Hard hard on an existing site (redirects)

URL structure

Short, readable, and logical addresses with keywords.

What it is

URL structure is the form of page addresses — their length, readability, the use of words vs. parameters, and the logic of folders (/category/product).

Why it matters

Clean URLs with keywords help users and search engines understand what the page is about, and they are shared and clicked more easily. Long addresses full of parameters and IDs are harder to remember and can create duplicates.

How to do it

  1. 1Use words separated by hyphens, lowercase, without diacritics or unnecessary parameters.
  2. 2Keep a logical folder hierarchy that matches the navigation.
  3. 3Keep URLs short and stable — don't change them unnecessarily.
  4. 4When a change is necessary, always set up a 301 redirect from the old to the new address.

Example

Wrong
example.cz/index.php?cat=12&id=8842&sort=asc
Correct
example.cz/winter-jackets/kids-jacket-blue

Conclusion

On a new site, design clean URLs correctly from the start — retroactive changes are demanding and risky (the need for redirects). On an existing site, change URLs only with a clear benefit and always with a 301. A readable address is a small but lasting advantage for both SEO and users.
